Our children are our greatest asset; they are our future.
But some of them are in peril, right here in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie Counties.
They need emergency mental health services located within their community to give them a chance at the future that we all want for our children.
Through New Horizons’ Capital Campaign, 4 Our Kids, you can make a difference in the lives of these children and their families. You can help to surround them with the care and treatment they so desperately need.
Our Kids Can’t Wait!
The Center for Children at New Horizons
Children experiencing a mental health crisis need an emergency care center that is located near their home. They need a place that is safe and supportive with a staff of professionals who are empathetic and smart about delivering emotional and behavioral health services to young people.
Boys and girls need a crisis center where trained professionals assess each child as an individual and provide a program of care that may include counseling and medication.
They also need a center that provides services to the family. It is very important for the family to be involved…in order to strengthen the family unit and to create an environment where the child will continue to progress after a brief stay in the crisis unit.
On the Treasure Coast and in Okeechobee, such treatment is lacking for children and families without medical insurance. The hurricanes of 2004 literally blew away the mental health facility in Port St. Lucie that cared for children in crisis. Currently the four- county area of Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie has only three patient beds available for needy boys and girls. The beds are located in Vero Beach at the Center for Behavioral Health.
