New Horizons & I.R.S.C. Partnering in Nursing Education

New Horizons of the Treasure Coast has hosted nursing students from Indian River State College for their weekly clinical experience since 1975.  I.R.S.C. Students along with Nursing Instructor, Lydia Turner, RN, MS visit the Adult Crisis Stabilization Unit, Short-term Residential Treatment Center and Detoxification Center in conjunction with their Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing course of study.

According to Turner, a Psychiatric Nursing Instructor with the college; “for the past 34 years students have enjoyed a very rewarding and educational experience under the guidance of New Horizons Director of Nursing, Susan Barnard, ARNP and Crisis Stabilization Unit Program Manager, Marybeth Pemberton, RN”.  Four I.R.S.C. student groups rotate through New Horizons annually.  Marybeth Pemberton is responsible for each group’s orientation prior to working with patients in the facility.  Interestingly, Pemberton herself is a graduate of the I.R.S.C. Nursing Program and was a student of Turner’s.

This partnership between Indian River State College and New Horizons of the Treasure Coast has proved to be both gratifying and successful for all taking part in the experience.
