New Horizons Honors Volunteers

Press Release: May 2008

New Horizons of the Treasure Coast celebrated National Volunteer Week by hosting a luncheon to honor the organization’s outstanding volunteers.  Using the theme, “You are the Wind beneath New Horizons Wings”, Volunteer coordinator Jose Rocha thanked the dedicated group for contributing more than 14,000 hours during the past year.  “The hours represent more than $110,000 in services provided to clients and staff,” he said.

The highlight of the luncheon was the presentation of the Volunteer of the Year Award to George Fredin. The tall Uncle Sam look-a-like is a resident of Port St. Lucie and has been a volunteer at New Horizons for the past year.  “George has volunteered more than 400 hours and has distinguished himself by his devotion his duties,” said Rocha.

Fredin, an accomplished artist, works with New Horizons’ clients two days each week helping the clients complete various arts and crafts projects.  With his attention to detail, he has also been recruited to help review and accumulate statistical data.  He handles the tedious job of tracking mileage on each vehicle, plus the hours and number of trips spent transporting clients.
