Psychiatrists Honored on National Doctors Day

Press Release:  April 2, 2008

The psychiatrists of New Horizons were honored during a Doctors Appreciation Dinner at Azure restaurant in St. Lucie West.  Physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners joined in the celebration as the doctors were recognized for the care and compassion they provide for their patients throughout the year.

“We salute our exceptional medical staff,” said John Romano, CEO.  “They are devoted to our clients and provide quality care for people who are often at the most challenging points of their lives.”

The dinner was held as New Horizons joined communities across the United States to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Doctors Day.  While physicians in all specialties and in primary care are honored, Doctors Day marks the date that Crawford W. Long, M.D., of Jefferson, GA, administered the first ether anesthetic for surgery on March 30, 1842.

More than one hundred years later, on March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors' Day.  In 1990, the congress and the senate approved legislation establishing National Doctors Day and President George Bush signed the resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors' Day.

Doctors Day celebrates Dr. Long's historic achievement and the continued efforts of physicians to alleviate human suffering and improve patient safety.
