New Horizons
Hosts Children’s Summit
Dr.
Shairi Turner, Chief Medical Officer of the Florida Department of
Juvenile Justice, was the keynote speaker at New Horizons’ recent
Children’s Behavioral Health Summit.
More
than 175 mental health, substance abuse, medical and teaching
professionals attended the January 25th conference at the
Kight Center for Emerging Technologies, Indian River Community College
main campus.
The
theme of the Summit was “Children in Crisis”. In addition to Dr.
Turner, there were outstanding presenters from Sandy Pines, Tykes and
Teens, Florida Atlantic University, and local law enforcement agencies.
Corporate sponsors of the event included: Indian River Community
College, Lawnwood Medical Center, PBC Credit Union, and Jackson Drugs.

Okeechobee Friends Honor Dr. Fred Brown
On November 1, more than 330 people filled the Recreation
Center of the First Baptist Church of Okeechobee to honor Dr. Fred
Brown. Brown is the beloved pediatrician, who has been caring for
Okeechobee children for more than 27 years.
As a special remembrance of the evening, Dr. Brown was presented
with a framed drawing of the proposed Center for Children at New Horizons.
John Romano, CEO of New Horizons announced that the first room in the Center
will be named in honor of Dr. Brown.
The event was the first fundraiser sponsored by the Okeechobee
Friends of New Horizons and raised more than $16,000. Proceeds will go toward
the building fund for the Center for Children at New Horizons.

John Romano presented Dr. Fred Brown with a drawing of
the Center for Children at New Horizons. Romano announced the
first room at the Center will be named in honor of Dr. Fred Brown.
